The Flyback transformer is similar to a buck-boost topology with an added transformer. The transformer provides isolation, step-up/step-down control using its winding turns ratio, and multi-output capabilities. Additionally, the transformer's inherent magnetizing inductance is used for magnetic energy storage and therefore a dedicated inductor is not required. Ease of control and low part count are attributes that make the flyback a very popular topology.
